Free Short Story Competition

Sci-rotica are proud to annouce their free entry short story competition!

Sci-rotica intend to hold a regular short story competition with generous prizes. Winners of the competition will be published in our own Sci-rotica and Best of Sci-rotica anthologies. The required themes are any of those listed under the Series and Lines categories on our Editorial Guidelines page. General formatting of the submission should also follow those outlined on our Submissions page. The rules of the competition are outlined below. By entering the competition you are agreeing to abide by these competition rules. Closing date is 1st August 2005.

Remember, we only accept original content in English, so you must hold the rights to any work you submit for this competition.

The Sci-rotica short story competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. Entries must be the original and unpublished work of the entrant written in English.

First Prize: £50 (or equivalent USD).

Second Prize: £30 (or equivalent USD).

Third Prize: £20 (or equivalent USD).

Worthy: £10 (or equivalent USD). An unlimited amount of runner-up prizes are offered at the descretion of the judges.

1 Eligibility

Entry is open to anyone over the age of 18. Entries must be the original and unpublished work of the entrant which has not been submitted for publication nor for any other competition, nor will it be so submitted for publication before the publication dates given in rule 4 (subject to the provisions of rule 5).


2 Manuscripts

Entries must be formatted according to our manuscript formatting guidelines and fronted by a title page stating entrant's name, address, and an email address. The title page should also state the exact word count which must be between 6,000 and 8,000 words. Entries can only be accepted in RTF format (see submission guidelines) by e-mail to competition@sci-rotica.com. Receipt of entries will be acknowledged by e-mail.


3 Competition Judging

Entries will be judged by person(s) appointed by Sci-rotica. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into. In the event of the judges deciding that no entry reached sufficient standard to be adjudged winner, Sci-rotica reserves the right to cancel the competition.


4. Prizes

Winners will be notified within ten weeks of the stated closing date of each competition. Unplaced entries may be submitted elsewhere after that ten weeks has elapsed.


5 Rights

[a] By entering, authors will have deemed to offer Sci-rotica first publication rights and Sci-rotica retain the right to publish (in full or abridged) winning and/or runner-up entries in any book, magazine, publication or website without further payment.

[b] Entrants undertake not to make any other use of winning or runner-up entries for two years after the announcement of the results without written permission.

[c] Copyright remains vested with the writer.

[d] Sci-rotica will use their best endeavours to encourage new writers through the awards and their publicity, and competition entrants undertake to cooperate in this spirit and not, for example, to refuse reasonable requests for their cooperation in publicity and public relations.
